The historic Woltersdorf Interurban Tramway

Around 30 kilometres east of central Berlin, at the Rahnsdorf stop on the S3 S-Bahn line, lies the terminus of a historic interurban tramway. At the very next S-Bahn stop, you can find route 88.

The operator Woltersdorfer Straßenbahn runs this service, route 87, which connects the aforementioned station with the town of Woltersdorf. The line itself is short but incredibly beautiful. Operating on a single-track layout with six passing loops (including the termini), it has remained unaltered since its opening in 1913.

The route runs in a straight line through a dense forest, passing beneath a canopy of trees, and continues through the town of Woltersdorf until it reaches the Schleuse (Lock) terminus. This is situated in a picturesque square where visitors can enjoy two lakes connected by a lock system, spanned by a footbridge that offers excellent views. These lakes are the Bauersee and the Falkensee, which form part of the River Löcknitz.

Back in 2018, the tram fleet consisted of:

  • 9 Gothawagen T57 trams, built between 1957 and 1961.
  • 1 Gothawagen T57 tram, converted into a works car with snowplow attachments, acquired from Berlin's BVG network.
  • 5 heritage vehicles, used on special occasions.

In the first photograph, we can see a Gothawagen T57, specifically car number 32, stabled at the Schleuse (Lock) terminus.

In the second photograph, we observe the same model, but in this case, one acquired from BVG and converted into a works car, stabled next to the depot.

In the third photograph, a trailing view shows a tram shortly after departing the Rahnsdorf terminus, heading into the depths of the forest. In the background, a passing loop can just be made out.
